Career
Connections:
With Lauren Hasson, The Résumé Girl
Let's talk student stress and careers: I remember that I was stressed
about my future career when I was just a sophomore in high school! It's funny
- looking back, I think to myself, "Why was I so worried about my career at such
a young age?" But at the time this was such a huge worry for me. I thought every
decision I made would significantly affect my future career from grades to activities
to community involvement.
So I have been there and know exactly what kind of stress students are feeling.
But the good news is that I survived the career search process. In fact, I've
made it through several career search processes and learned some very valuable
lessons along the way that I would like to share with students who are worrying
about their career right now.
So, what I tell students who are stressed about their career search is to remember
four things:
1. Stop thinking of a career as a means of "saving your life." A job is not a
life and it cannot make you happy.
2. Stop thinking of your first career search and job as a destination and start
thinking of it as part of a life-long journey. Your first job will more than
likely not be your last so relax about finding the perfect position.
3. Relax about the career choices you will make. Try something and if you don't
like it try something else.
4. Get organized and create an action plan/road map that you will follow. This
really helps when you feel like you have so much to do and very little time to
do it all.

I was so honored to interview actress Danica McKellar for this week's
feature. I essentially grew up with Danica while watching The
Wonder Years - in case you didn't know, Danica played Winnie Cooper,
Kevin Arnold's childhood sweetheart. My father was a HUGE Wonder
Years fan - when I was in 4th grade, I actually had to beg my parents
for three months to get my hair cut because they loved that Winnie
Cooper look so much. My hair wasn't thin and silky straight like
Winnie's and I looked like a cavewoman. But I digress ... :-)
Danica recently authored
her first book, Math
Doesn't Suck and produced her first Yoga DVD,
Daily Dose
of Dharma. If you're interested in purchasing her Yoga DVD,
she was generous enough to offer a 15% discount on her DVD to Campus
Calm e-zine subscribers through November 1st. When you go to the purchase
screen here simply
type in the coupon code CALM15. This coupon is good for all domestic
orders (within the U.S.). Scroll down below for the interview.

Danica McKellar Dishes About Yoga, Glam Girl Brainpower and why Math DOESN'T Suck
By: Maria Pascucci
Campus Calm had
the opportunity to speak with actress Danica McKellar about yoga, glam
girl brainpower and why math (most certainly) doesn't suck. Best known
for her roles on The Wonder Years and The West Wing, Danica McKellar is
also an internationally-recognized mathematician and advocate for math
education. She wrote MATH DOESN'T SUCK, to rip the lid off the myth that
math "sucks," helping to show that math can be easy, relevant,
and even glamorous-while providing the tools needed to ace the next big
math test!
A summa cum laude graduate of UCLA with a degree in Mathematics, Danica has been
honored in Britain's esteemed Journal of Physics and the New York Times
for her work in mathematics, most notably for her role as co-author of
a ground-breaking mathematical physics theorem which bears her name (The
Chayes-McKellar-Winn Theorem).
Danica also recently teamed up with her mother Mahaila McKellar, a certified
meditation instructor, to produce Daily Dose of Dharma, a two-disc yoga
and meditation DVD.
Campus Calm: Why
did you write your book MATH DOESN'T SUCK?
Danica: Because I love math and I'm passionate about helping girls to not be
afraid of math.
Campus Calm: Even
if you don't "get" math right away why is the reward worth
the effort and struggle to understand it?
Danica: Math comes up a lot in every day life and I go through a lot of those
examples in the book. Beyond that, there's something to be gained from thinking
that you can't do something, struggling with it and then overcoming that challenge
and succeeding. That kind of confidence that you get from going through that,
I think is more valuable than any particular subject. It's a tool that girls
will find will serve them in terms of the young women they will become. They
need to know that they can handle challenges and that they don't back down and
shy away from them.

Calming Down Changed My Life
My name is Maria Pascucci and I am the president and founder of Campus Calm.
I am a full–time writer and entrepreneur who discovered the
joy of creating my own success when I stopped trying to prove to the
world that I was the best. Allow me to explain. A perfectionist throughout
my college years, I'd rather skip an assignment than risk turning in
a less–than–perfect paper. After four years of denying
myself happiness to strive for perfection, I graduated with a 3.92
GPA. Then I fell into a depression. I never once congratulated myself
for graduating from college because all I could think about was the
next task of trying to prove myself in the real world.
Somewhere along the way in the past five years since graduation, I ditched
my need to be perfect and began focusing on what I wanted, not what my family,
friends and acquaintances in the supermarket thought I should want. Guess
what – it was the most liberating thing I've ever done – and it paved the way for
the success I enjoy today. My only regret is that I can't go back and help
the stressed out student that I was once. But I can help all you fellow high–achieving
students. I've made it my mission to do just that!
Questions & comments – Please email me at the address below. I'm thrilled to hear from you!
