A Tuesday With Meg: Playlist Positivity

Wow, I seem to be all over the different days of the week lately! For a special Tuesday edition of my blog, I decided to try something a little different and fun. I’m a huge fan of music. I like pretty much every genre, but I definitely consider myself to be a rock and pop type of girl. Music is food for the soul. It can capture any emotion you’re feeling–happiness, despair, love, hate, anger, hope–and just let you connect with those feelings in ways that nothing else can. I’ve decided to share some of my favorite uplifting songs, the songs I always listen to when I’m in a bad mood or when I need a smile put on my face. While I feel silly dancing around my apartment to these songs, it instantly makes me feel better. Sometimes the best pick me up is just dancing around when no one is watching 🙂

Here are a few of my favorite tracks:

1. “The Middle” by Jimmy Eat World. I’ve loved this song since I was 14. No other song has the ability to instantly put me in a better mood than “The Middle”–the beat, the lyrics, the guitar solos…everything about it screams dance around in your socks and forget all of the bad crap in your life. Favorite uplifting lyric: “Live right now/ yeah, just be yourself/
It doesn’t matter if it’s good enough/ for someone else”

2. “Shake It Out” by Florence + the Machine. I LOVE Flo. One of my favorite artists to emerge in the past 5 years. Soulful and truthful, Flo’s music always touches me and makes me want to belt her lyrics at the top of my lungs. “Shake It Out” is a song about starting fresh, in spite of mistakes and failures. Favorite inspiring lyric: “I am done with my graceless heart/So tonight I’m gonna cut it out and then restart…It’s always darkest before the dawn.”

3. “Lights” by Ellie Goulding. This song has just recently become popular in the US, but I was first introduced to Ellie during my study abroad in London 2011. Even though I hear it every time I turn on the radio, this song still picks me up and puts a smile on my face. To me, this song is about overcoming your darkest moments and realizing all of the wonderful things and people in your life. Favorite inspiring lyrics: “You show the lights that stop me turn to stone/You shine it when I’m alone/And so I tell myself that I’ll be strong/And dreaming when they’re gone”

4.”Shuffle” by Bombay Bicycle Club. This is a song that always gets my toes tapping and head bopping, no matter where I am. For the longest time, I had no clue what the lyrics were (and I didn’t really care) because I was too obsessed with the uplifting melody. But taking a look at those lyrics, I was pleasantly surprised. Plus, now that I know the lyrics, I find the chorus super catchy. This is an uplifting song, through and through. Favorite inspiring lyrics: “Weight is coming off/ Soaring high/ Pleading you to stay/Come Alive”

5. “Titanium” by David Guetta ft. Sia. Ok, yes, I know…this song is “old” in terms of pop music (forgive me, I don’t listen to the radio a lot). No matter how many times you’ve heard this song, you can’t deny the power and the passion behind Sia’s voice. It’s definitely a song to dance to, but if you’ve really stopped to listen to the lyrics, it’s really inspiring as well. Favorite uplifting lyrics: “I’m criticized but all your bullets ricochet
/You shoot me down, but I get up/I’m bulletproof, nothing to lose/Fire away, fire away”

You can hear my entire playlist on my Spotify or on YouTube. Feel free to share some of your favorite uplifting tracks below–I’m always looking for new music to listen to!
