Mental Health Survival Expert Tip of the Month- Sep 09

By Colleen Coffey

September always brings a warm fuzzy feeling to my heart. It is the month when I used to get into the groove of things in college, the month where there is a hint of fall in the air, the month of football and changing leaves. September is also the month where I was born and this particular September I will celebrate by 30th birthday (I know- that is really old!)

So, in honor of my 30’s I have written 30 tips related to stress and mental health just for you that I have learned throughout my years as a consumer, college student, mental health advocate, speaker, and woman.

1.Sing, no matter how you sound
2. Dance, but only with people you have a REAL crush on
3. Eat more ice cream
4. Speak less, ask more
5. Take at least ten minutes a day to breathe
6. Don’t let other people dictate how you feel about yourself
7. When technology does not work, it can help to throw it or poke it with a stick
8. Save your money (I love Dave Ramsey)
9. Approach people who you want to be friends with
10. Do things you never thought you could but always wanted to
11. Drive to nowhere once in a while
12. Soak in romantic moments
13. Remind yourself why you rock every once in a while
14. Think about your biggest flaw and find some reasons to love it!
15. Celebrate the success of others as opposed to pushing to compete with them
16. Try making a mustard smiley face on your next sandwich
17. Laugh LOUDLY- no matter who is around
18. Ask questions and keep asking until you get an answer
19. Wear a color you have never worn before to an important event
20. There is nothing wrong with a little Lifetime TV every now and then
21. Spend time with animals
22. “Loose” your cell phone at least one day/ week
23. Turn off your internet at least one day/ month
24. Play after you study/ work
25. Schedule down time in your day
26. Give lots of hugs to get lots of hugs
27. Read from the opposing viewpoint every now and then
28. Wear funny socks
29. Ask for help
30. My favorite quote “To do get something you never had, you have to do something you never did.”

I wish you all the best for a wonderful September. Here’s to my new favorite number-30!
