This month is all patriotic rah rah sis boom ba, but I have to interject a bit of global reality. America is exporting our body image anxiety—along with our celebrity obsession and McDonalds. Eating disorders can now be found in all corners of the globe, including countries like India with large populations in poverty.
Perhaps one way to love your own body more this month is to do something to actively combat the widespread proliferation of America’s thin ideal. Write an op-ed on the subject. Blog on your MySpace page. Or hey, give money to Oxfam or another great organization fighting world hunger. It is all connected.
